We are looking for volunteers to join our Wildlife Camera Survey this Winter (November 2019-April 2020).
The wildlife camera survey is part of the Wolverine Tracking Project, a long-term community science project studying rare carnivores in Mt Hood National Forest.
Learn about and helping to protect our local wildlife
Help search for wolverine and wolves, study the distribution of rare montane red fox, and document other resident carnivores in a field-based research setting
Volunteers on our camera crews are responsible for checking a camera site 3-4 times during the season. During your visit, you will change the batteries and memory card, refresh the bait, and collect any hair or scat samples. Before heading out, you will pick up equipment from the Cascadia Wild office in NE Portland, and return it after your trip. Checking a camera is usually a full-day trip. Some cameras are close to the road, others are a substantial hike or snowshoe in. You will be assigned to groups based on how far you wish to hike.
Volunteers receive weekly updates with all the best photos and project news, and you will have access to all of the season's photos. Volunteers are also eligible to receive discounts on Cascadia Wild classes, programs, and workshops.
Everyone is welcome to join a camera crew, however we do have a few qualifications:
- Must be reliable and have time to visit the camera 3-4 times during the season
- Must have transportation to Mt Hood National Forest. During the winter, highway regulations require 2-wheel drive vehicles to carry tire chains.
- Must be comfortable hiking off-trail and must be comfortable snowshoeing
- Must be able to carry up to 10 lbs of camera gear and bait to the survey location
- Must be able to use a GPS to navigate (we can train)
