Do you like to work outdoors?  Mentor others?  And want to make a difference planting trees?  Our Crew Leader position might be for you!  Friends of Trees Crew Leaders are trained volunteer leaders who are responsible for leading small groups of volunteers during our Saturday morning planting events.

Crew Leaders demonstrate how to plant trees properly while maintaining a fun, safe, and educational environment. This is a dynamic and social leadership role best suited for people wanting to learn more about trees, work with a diverse community of people in a mentorship role, and get their hands dirty outdoors. As a Crew Leader, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on our natural environment and the communities we work with!

  • GREEN SPACE CREW LEADERS work to restore natural areas and green spaces by planting native trees and shrubs to add both function and beauty to these areas. Plant stock is generally 1ft-3ft tall or in 1 gallon containers at the time of planting. Green Space events take place all over Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, and Marion counties in the Portland-Metro area; and across Lane and Marion counties in Eugene and Salem, respectively. This role is a great option if you do not live in Portland, Eugene, or Salem proper. **Please note: many Green Space events they are not easily accessible by bike, bus, or Max light rail. Independent, personal transportation or carpooling is encouraged.  The Green Space Crew Leader training will be Sat, Oct 26th, 9am-3pm (NW Portland).

  • NEIGHBORHOOD TREES CREW LEADERS work to bring the benefits of urban trees to low-canopy neighborhoods by planting street and yard trees throughout the many urban neighborhoods we work in. Crew Leaders often lead groups of 4-5 volunteers alongside another trained CL to load and plant about 10 trees throughout the neighborhood. Trees are usually balled & burlap or container stock, 6-7ft tall, and weigh about 50-60lbs at the time of planting. Plantings are generally followed by a volunteer-prepared hot lunch.  The Neighborhood Trees Crew Leader trainings will be Sat, Nov 2nd, 9am-4pm (NE Portland), and Sat, Nov 9th, 9am-4pm (SE Vancouver, WA).

To be a Crew Leader, we ask that you attend a 1-day training (classroom and field training) and commit to four or more planting events Nov – April. You’ll also get a free Tree Team t-shirt, your own personal Friends of Trees name badge, awesome food, and lots of tree knowledge! Space is limited at each of these events, so register early to hold your spot!
