Join the Columbia Slough Watershed Council for Regatta, an on the water paddle festival like no other, Sunday, August 5th from 10am to 2pm.

Regatta celebrates recreation opportunities on Portland’s hidden gem of local waterways, the Columbia Slough. Regatta is not actually a race; this family friendly event is a fun paddle for experienced paddlers and novice paddlers alike.

The event features complimentary 45-minute canoe and kayak rentals (all equipment provided) for registered attendees. Before and after paddling, participants can visit with local environmental and water-based organizations, enjoy hands-on nature activities, live music and guided tours of Multnomah County levee system that reduces the risk of flooding for nearly 13,000 acres near the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Free t-shirts and refreshments will be provided while supplies last.

Regatta is an opportunity for neighbors to embrace this historically “under-loved” waterway. Throughout its twenty-three years the Columbia Slough Watershed Council has worked to create partnerships with local government, businesses, community members, and environmental interests to help recognize and promote the Slough as a regional amenity and recreational destination. The Slough is a unique waterway because it is situated in one of the most populated and industrialized areas in Oregon. In the past various water quality issues had a large impact on fish and other aquatic species. People were reluctant to paddle and swim in the area. But since the first Regatta celebration in 1995, Clean Water Act requirements, installation of sewers, riparian planting projects, individual actions, and stormwater management projects have limited harmful pollutants. Today the Slough is the cleanest it has been in over a hundred years.

Advanced registration is required at https://columbiaslough.org/events/event/248/ or by calling (503) 281-1132. Participants with their own human-powered watercraft and safety equipment are also welcome to register at the link above. Crews will be available to help unload and transport boats. A donation of $10/person $25/family is requested; no one is turned away.

Individuals and families are welcome to bring their own boat anytime from 9am to 1pm.
