Discover the joys of Oregon bird watching in this beginner-level birding class on Thursday night followed by a field trip on Sunday morning.

Oregon is host to many birds year-round but welcomes even more species during winter thanks to our mild climate. In this class, experienced birder Laura Whittemore will introduce you to the visiting raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds that migrate here from farther north to make our mild climate their home for the winter. We will also cover how to properly use binoculars, how to see the field marks that identify our local birds, and where and when to go birding for maximum enjoyment and education. This class includes a Thursday evening classroom talk and a Sunday morning field trip.

INDOOR CLASSROOM PRESENTATION:

THURSDAY EVENING December12, 6:30 to 8:30pm at Dirksen Nature Center in Tigard.

OUTDOOR FIELD TRIP:

SUNDAY MORNING December 15, 10:00am to 1:00pm at Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Longtime birder and teacher Laura Whittemore loves to show beginners the tricks of the trade. She has taught classes for the Audubon Society of Portland, Hoyt Arburetum, Jackson Bottom Wetlands, and previously worked for Backyard Bird Shop, where she helped bird-feeding enthusiasts ID those confusing little brown birds. Laura holds a BA in Biology from Lewis and Clark College and has traveled in the United States, Australia, South Africa, and Antarctica in search of birds.
