Dr. Martin Luther King Junior dedicated his life to advancing civil rights and fighting racism and oppression. To honor his legacy, we will participate in reflective conversations and activities in addition to restoring habitat at Foster Floodplain.

We know that groups often look for service opportunities on Dr. MLK Jr. day, and our organization has long held an event on this day of service.

If you are part of a group that would like to participate, we encourage and will prioritize offering this event to groups who choose to volunteer AND DONATE to a BIPOC led group working for racial justice.

Not sure who to support? Register now and receive an emailed list of suggested organizations.

When: Monday January 16th, 2022 10am-12pm

Where: Foster Floodplain Natural Area 10602 SE Foster Rd, Portland, OR 97266

How to prepare: This event will happen rain or shine, so dress for weather: rain coat, warm layers, sun hat, and sunscreen as necessary. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a filled water bottle and a snack.

We will provide: Gloves, all necessary tools and instruction. We can also provide bus fare to and from the event. Please contact monica@jcwc.org to arrange bus fare. We will provide hot drinks and snacks!!

Getting there:

By transit: Take route # 14 east to SE 97th & Foster, then walk about 0.5 miles east on SE Foster Rd.  Or, walk about 0.75 miles east on SE Foster Rd. from the Lents Town Center/Foster Rd MAX station.

By bike: Bike east on Foster Rd. to the small parking lot between 103rd Place and 107th Ave. Or take the Springwater Corridor Trail to the Foster Road crossing, turn right on SE Foster Rd., then turn immediately right again into the small parking lot.

By car: Take SE Foster Rd. east and park in the small parking on the south side of Foster Road between 103rd Place and 107th Ave. Meet at the foot of the footbridge near the parking lot.

Covid-19 safety: We will follow current Oregon Health Authority guidelines. Masks are not required, but encouraged in indoor spaces where social distancing is not possible. Stay home if you are experiencing symptoms of any contagious illness or have had recent contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of any illness.

A huge thank you to Portland Parks and Recreation for helping to organize this event and to our generous funders that make the volunteer program possible. Thank you to the Mintkeski Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, Portland General Electric, City of Gresham, Clackamas Water Environment Services, and City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services.
