See one of the Oregon Coast's prettiest Sitka spruce and western hemlock rainforests while improving a popular hiking trail! Cascade Head Preserve is a coastal promontory overlooking the Pacific Ocean that provides habitat for native prairie grasses, rare wildflowers, and the Threatened Oregon Silverspot Butterfly. You can read more about this preserve online.
What are we doing, exactly? Volunteers will be installing geocells and gravel to improve muddy locations on forested sections of the trail. The work includes a two to three-mile roundtrip hike with elevation gain and may require volunteers to hike off trail and stand on uneven ground while working. It will be a strenuous work party and involves helping us move heavy loads of sand or gravel using wheelbarrows or buckets. Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are recommended. Please note that the hike time is included in the event time. An optional hike to view the meadow adds another one to two miles from the work location.
Please BRING: Lunch, hiking boots, a long-sleeved work shirt and pants, a daypack, plenty of water for the day, layers of clothing including raingear, a hat, and sunscreen. Bring gloves and a wheelbarrow if you have them – if not, you can borrow ours. Carpool available from Portland.
