Most people don’t even know about the amazing gem hidden right in their own backyard - the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge! Just 20 minutes north of the greater Portland-metro area, Ridgefield NWR hosts hundreds of species of birds and other wildlife, and is the home of the celebration of the fall migration of the Sandhill Crane, BirdFest & Bluegrass. Thousands flock to

Ridgefield every year to celebrate, experience wildlife first hand, and learn about the local history against the backdrop of open habitat.

The first Sandhill Crane tour kicks off the weekend on Friday, along with a happy hour benefit for the Friend of the Refuge. Saturday is packed with activities for all ages, all over town! From bird walks and bird language workshops to Sandhill Crane tours and a variety of hikes including: photo, geology, ethnobotany, and an evening hike, there is plenty to do and see! Kayaking and Big Canoe river trips can be reserved in advance by calling the numbers listed on the web site or in the schedule of events. The birders’ marketplace will offer great buys on garden items, pottery, art, photography, birdhouses, clothes, books and other items. Enjoy bluegrass music throughout Ridgefield on Saturday, with picker’s jamming in businesses, venues, and parks around town. Saturday will wrap up with a featured bluegrass performance. Sunday's events will focus on the Refuge, culminating with our long-running and much-loved Salmon Bake.
