Enjoy a relaxing float down the beautiful Sandy River while collecting litter along its banks. This event is half peaceful river float, half exciting trash scavenger hunt!
All summer long, thousands of people from across Oregon swim, splash, float, and boat along the lower Sandy River. Many Sandy visitors 'Stash the Trash' and pack out their garbage, while others leave their trash behind to flow down the river into the ocean, damaging sensitive wildlife habitats and our communities downstream.
This September 19th, we're going to stop trash in its tracks at the Lower Sandy Floating Cleanup. We'll gather at Dabney State Recreation Area, launch our rafts, and stop along the way collecting litter, sometimes digging something exciting out of the sand, like a tire or car engine... Who knows what you'll find!
This year we're introducing a Land Litter Team, where you can participate from the comfort of your own two feet! Youth between 10-17 are also very welcome on water & land teams and must be accompanied by an adult. We're prepared with COVID-19 safety measures, including ensuring rafts are used by groups of 4-6 people who are already in a 'COVID exposure circle' or household, and pre-event sign-ins online.
In 2019, floating volunteers collected 750 pounds of trash from the banks of the Sandy. Let's do it again to help migrating salmon, other wildlife, and our community members to enjoy a clean river!
