AccessTrails, a program of Access Recreation, provides information on trails and other park features to increase recreation opportunities for people of all abilities. View videos, maps and descriptions of 20+ parks and trails to help plan your visits.

Although the information presented addresses concerns of people with disabilities, it benefits all trail users. It also sets a new standard for hiking trail descriptions that we hope will be widely adopted. For help implementing the Guidelines for Providing Trail Info to People with Disabilities, please contact Project Coordinator Georgena Moran at georgena@accessrecreation.org.

The latest from AccessTrails

February 13, 2017

Access Recreation (AR), based on the success of the Guidelines for Providing Trail Information to People with Disabilities, was awarded two Nature in Neighborhoods grants from Metro to conduct 36 trail assessments and produce 18 videos over a three-year period. The AR team is using the winter months to review all of the AccessTrails webpages for accuracy and to begin outreach efforts to trail users, particularly families and individuals with disabilities. Trail assessments will continue in the spring, with completion by June 30, 2017. In the summer, the remaining webpages and videos will be completed. This grant phase of the project will be completed by September 30, 2017.

In addition to developing more innovative projects and programs, the future of AR will lean heavily on the promotion of the Guideline principles to trail agencies. Follow-up trainings with agency staff will ensure that these methods of information sharing can be applied to all of their trails and websites, independently.

Access Recreation, and the AccessTrails Project, is in partnership with the new Education Center at the Oregon Zoo. The Education Center will spread the word about AccessTrails in comic book form to young trail users. The Ed Center will be a place to learn about wildlife and ways to take action on behalf of the natural world. The grand opening for the Education Center is March 2, 2017.

The next AR Quarterly Meeting will be Wednesday, April 26, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Independent Living Resources,1839 NE Couch Street, in Portland.

The Access Recreation Partners Event took place on July 6. Thank you again for all who attended and provided information on trails. I have attached a document of the current trails that have been proposed.

If you have not yet provided suggestions for trails or parks in your jurisdiction, please do so now. Otherwise, we will select for you [asking for your approval, afterwards…]! We hope to confirm the trails for the upcoming year in the next week or two. The sooner we can receive this information the better!  Use AR’s trail choosing criteria to determine the best fit. It is attached.

As I mentioned in a previous email, AR is developing a Partners Page on our website. On this page, we will have your logo and a brief description of your agency/organization. See the mockup for the “Our Partners” page. Please, provide us a short 240-290 character [including spaces] description we can include here. This is a reduced number than previously requested, in order to fit the allotted space. Also, the links are live. Click on your logo and let us know if it is going to your preferred page. This page is for all partners, new and old, with or without trails.

Thanks,

Georgena
