My husband and I had a couple out-of-town friends visiting us one weekend. Thankfully, it was a warm, sunny weekend in Oregon (often hard to find!). So we threw on shorts, a swim suit, and packed a picnic lunch and walked and rode bikes down the street from our home in Wilsonville to Memorial Park (8100 SW Wilsonville Road).
Memorial Park is huge and offers activities for everyone to enjoy – from tennis courts to baseball fields for the sports enthusiasts, to skate ramps and jumps for the risk-seeking teens, and playgrounds and water features for the kiddos. However, none of these were for us that day. We were in search of open grass for some good ol’ fashion field games and a shady picnic spot.
We found the River Shelter at the lower park, which provided tables, bbq grills, water, and shade for our refreshment. Next to the shelter was an open grass field where Ryan and Megan competed in an “intense” game of Bocce Ball. (The winner is still debated to this day!).
After a picnic lunch and some relaxing in the Oregon sun, it was time to hit the water! Krystel and I made it to the dock first and didn’t have to wait for anyone to tell us to jump in! The water was crisp and refreshing! Just a short walk down a trail from the River Shelter, where squirrels and an occasional deer can be spotted, you'll find a dock on the Willamette River. There you can find sun bathers, swimmers showing off with wild flips and dives, dogs retrieving their beloved tennis balls, and boaters waving as they cruise by.
What a great day and a great way to introduce our visiting friends to the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the small piece of it found in Wilsonville. Nothing else beats it - and that, unlike Bocce Ball winners, is not debatable!
